About Us

Welcome to The Third Half, an independent football business publication founded by Tom Whittle and Connor Linnett dedicated to exploring the commercial developments, strategic decisions and wider issues shaping modern football.

Our journey began at Liverpool John Moores University, where we met studying Sport Business. United by our passion for Everton FC, we developed a shared interest in the business and complexities of the football industry.

During our undergraduate studies, we collaborated on a marketing portfolio for a Merseyside charity football club. Our individual dissertations explored contrasting aspects of the game: Connor examined the growing commercialisation of English football and its impact on supporters, while Tom investigated the challenges within academy football and their implications for player development and well-being.

Our postgraduate studies further developed this expertise. Connor pursued an MSc in Digital Marketing, producing a marketing portfolio for a semi-professional football club. Tom completed an MSc in International Business & Management, researching Everton's stadium relocation and its implications for international brand positioning, commercial growth and local identity.

Our Purpose

The Third Half aims to provide insightful, research-led journalism examining football beyond matchday. From sponsorship and commercial partnerships to ownership, marketing, stadium development and supporter culture we explore the decisions influencing the game's future.

While our Everton connection brought us together, our coverage extends across the football pyramid, combining independent analysis with accessible storytelling to inform and engage supporters and industry professionals alike.
